Smith, H. A., & Lewis, E. B. (2008). Keeping the
night watch. New York: Henry Holt.
A difficult
time that some children may have to face is the separation of their parents.
Sometimes the children are left filled with resentment and questions that are
left unanswered. This tells a story of a young boy by the name of C.J. who is
troubled by the fact that his father abandoned them. As if getting used to this
idea isn’t enough, he now has to get used to the idea of his return. How can
someone so important in your life leave just like that and come back just with
the same ease? Told in a quite original style in poetry form, these poems
outline the true emotions of a kid who is trying to understand the way things
are playing out for him.
One of my best students this year, key football player, told me that his parents haven't been to any of his football games. EVER. This year, his Senior year, our team, for the first time in the history of C.C. Winn (established in 2006) has made it all the way to the third round, our boys are Area Champs! And to hear that his parents have never been to any of his games, EVER was quite shocking. His mother works two different jobs to keep food on the table. His father left them when he was younger. His resentment towards his dad is heartbreakingly scary, but how can he blamed? "He left us becuase he didn't want us. So when he calls to talk to us, I can't talk to him because I can't forgive him for not wanting me." As sad and scary as it sounds, this is the reality for many children and teenagers out there. The world is already a cruel one, why are parents contributing to the cruelness for their children?
