A Wreath for Emmet Till

Nelson, M., & Lardy, P. (2005). A wreath for Emmett Till. Boston: Houghton Mifflin.

This is a collection of 14 Italian sonnets, which are 14 line poems, written in iambic pentameter perfectly depict the emotions elicited by the horrific event that took Emmett Till’s life. The content of these sonnets are filled with allusions, symbolism, and vivid imagery that depict the events that outline the lynching of Emmett Till. If poetry is not your forte, fear no more, for the author also provides sonnet notes to facilitate sonnet comprehension along with some background information that took place. Overall, interesting and effective, but perhaps a bit too much for a young audience, reader discretion is advised.

This topic was a bit too much for my kids so I opted out of reading it to them, plus I thought the form was a bit too complicated for a 9 year old. The poems were touching and depicted vivid emotions. Bottomline here, the nature of the topic at hand is touchy in any shape and form. It is necessary for it to be addressed and since it deals with the brutal murder of a young man, I suppose that for a young group. it's best that it is done through poetry. I did enjoy it, but like I said, the age group needs to be a bit more mature...my personal opinion!
